In building the multi-billion dollar, new Surrey hospital and BC Cancer Centre in British Columbia, Canada, Fraser Health Authority (FHA) is creating a facility at the forefront of technology and sustainability. This project will act as a stepping stone towards it moving further into a digital environment.

The site will integrate digital and virtual care technologies to enable and support patient care within the hospital and beyond. With a wider focus on ’planetary health’, it will also be among the province’s first fully electric hospitals, and one of the first in Canada.

Working with the client from the outset, Okana provided the strategy for the design, construction, completion, and future use, including assistance in creating the design-bid-build tender documentation, assessing the contractor response, and supporting contractual processes. As a key part of this process, Okana specified and assisted the client, and its supply chain, in the application of ISO 19650 processes. ISO 19650 ensures partners can collaborate and benefit from consistent information management processes. This consistency allowed the client to reduce errors, cut costs and boost carbon performance.

Through ISO 19650, Okana specified a digital replica of the entire site. Through an integrated building management platform, this digital replica will continue to mirror the actual structure throughout its lifecycle into operation. As modern hospitals are among the most complex buildings on earth, this will allow the client to continue to track changes in the facility even after completion.

But while this digitally experienced client had previously used building information modelling (BIM), FHA were contending with the unstandardised data it was being provided. It meant data had to be manually manipulated for input in their CAFM system. We worked closely with FHA to specify open data formats to facilitate the sharing of robust, structured data aligned to international standards. This provided the client with a software-agnostic solution as well as a future-proof dataset and complete autonomy over their data.
